Gattaca
I watched Gattaca - a sci-fi movie from way back in 1997 - which explores life in a world where genetic modification is possible. The protagonist is a man borne out of love, who navigates this world while experiencing discrimination for being genetically imperfect.
There is a scene which particularly moved me, where this man outperforms his genetically modified brother in a swim out to the sea. When his brother asks, “How are you doing this?”, the man responds, “I never save anything for the swim back.”. The tagline for Gattaca is particularly apt - “There is no gene for the human spirit.”. It has been a while since I have enjoyed a movie this thoroughly. The notion of beating the odds purely with indomitable spirit is a heartwarming one and I hope to do the same in my lifetime.
